Which Salesforce certification should you take?

Salesforce certifications branch by role and by cloud rather than forming a single ladder. Match your day-to-day work to a line below, and the right credential follows.

New to Salesforce
Certified Platform Foundations and ADM-201 Certified Platform Administrator are the standard entry points — they cover the core object model, security, and declarative automation every later credential assumes.
Administering an org day to day
ADM-201 is the baseline; ADM-211 Administrator II validates advanced configuration, and the Certified Platform App Builder credential proves low-code app design.
Writing Apex and Lightning code
Certified Platform Developer is the entry developer credential; Certified Platform Developer II validates advanced programmatic skill across Apex, LWC, and integration.
Designing enterprise architecture
The architect track — Data Architect, Integration Architect, Identity and Access Management Architect, and Sharing and Visibility Architect — builds toward enterprise-wide solution design.
Implementing a specific cloud
Consultant credentials map to products: Sales Cloud, Service Cloud, Experience Cloud, Data Cloud, and Marketing Cloud each have a dedicated consultant exam.
Building AI agents on the platform
Certified Agentforce Specialist is the credential for the Agentforce and Einstein AI capabilities Salesforce is investing in most heavily.
Specializing in an industry cloud
The Accredited Professional credentials cover industry verticals — Financial Services, Health, Manufacturing, Communications, Public Sector, and more — for consultants working in a specific sector.

Salesforce certification FAQ

Real questions from candidates choosing between Salesforce certifications, college, and an AI-shifting platform — answered with numbers, trade-offs, and honest framing.

Which Salesforce certification should I start with — and how does it compare to a college degree path?

Salesforce Administrator (ADM-201) is the right starting point for 90% of candidates — no prerequisites, the most widely held cert in the ecosystem, and the gateway to roughly half of higher-level credentials. Compared to a four-year degree, the Admin path takes 8–16 weeks of self-study versus four years, and the Salesforce ecosystem famously hires admins without degrees if they can demonstrate platform competency.

Salesforce itself has publicly emphasized skills-based hiring through its Trailblazer program. A degree still helps for some employer-specific HR filters, but in the Salesforce ecosystem specifically, certifications plus a Trailhead portfolio carry more weight than a generic CS degree.

How much do Salesforce certifications cost compared to a four-year degree?

Most Salesforce certification exams cost $200 USD, with retakes at $100. The Certified Associate-level exams cost $75. A typical Salesforce career stack — Associate + Admin + Advanced Admin + a consultant or developer cert — costs $675–$875 in exam fees. Compare that to $40,000–$200,000 for a four-year degree.

Salesforce also offers free vouchers through Trailhead events, World Tour conferences, Dreamforce, the Trailblazer Community Group network, and the Trailhead Military program (formerly Vetforce) for veterans. The Certified Technical Architect (CTA) is the one exception to the affordable pricing model at $6,000 — but CTA candidates are typically already earning $150K+ when they pursue it.

What's the starting salary for a Salesforce-certified admin versus a CS graduate?

Entry-level Salesforce Administrators in the US typically start at $65K–$85K with the Admin cert and 1–2 years of hands-on experience. New CS graduates without specialized certifications start at $65K–$85K for general developer roles. The salaries are roughly comparable at entry — but the Salesforce path compounds faster: adding Advanced Admin, a consultant cert, and 2–3 years of experience commonly pushes salary to $110K–$140K.

Architect-track Salesforce roles ($160K–$190K) and CTA ($200K–$280K) outpace what most CS graduates earn for the first 8–10 years of their careers. The Salesforce ecosystem rewards stacked credentials and demonstrated platform depth more than it rewards a degree.

How do Salesforce certification maintenance exams work?

Salesforce releases three major platform updates per year (Spring, Summer, Winter), and Salesforce publishes a fresh maintenance badge for each affected credential after each release. Under the current policy you only need to complete one maintenance badge per certification per year, not one per release — typically 30–60 minutes of learning plus a short Trailhead assessment. Maintenance is free.

Miss the annual deadline and the certification goes inactive until you re-earn it by passing the full exam again. The time cost still compounds with multiple credentials — holding five active certifications means five maintenance badges every year — but it's substantially lighter than maintenance every release cycle.

Are Salesforce certifications worth it with Agentforce and AI changing the platform?

Agentforce and Data Cloud are reshaping which Salesforce skills are valuable, not eliminating the value of certification. Demand is shifting toward credentials that touch AI, data, and integration: Agentforce Specialist, Data Cloud Consultant, AI Specialist, and the architect-track certs.

Declarative-only Admin work is increasingly being absorbed into AI-driven automation — but Admins who can configure, govern, and troubleshoot Agentforce agents are in higher demand than ever, because organizations need humans accountable for what AI does inside their CRM. If you're certifying now with a multi-year horizon, weight toward Agentforce Specialist, Data Cloud, and at least one architect-track credential alongside Admin.

Which Salesforce certifications matter most in an AI-dominated economy?

Four to prioritize: Agentforce Specialist (governs autonomous AI agents inside Salesforce), Data Cloud Consultant (the data foundation Agentforce runs on), AI Specialist (Einstein and generative AI features), and any architect-track credential (Application Architect, System Architect, or one of the domain architects).

The pattern is the same as Microsoft: AI-native skills plus the architecture and governance layer that AI cannot perform. Admin and developer credentials still matter as the foundation, but stacking an AI-era credential on top is what separates a candidate at the median from a candidate at the top of the salary band.

Is the Salesforce Administrator certification enough to get a job without a degree?

Yes, regularly — but the Admin cert plus zero hands-on experience produces what hiring managers call "paper admins," and they screen for it. To convert the cert into a job without a degree, pair it with: a Trailhead Ranger or higher rank, a portfolio of Trailhead Superbadges (Business Administration Specialist, Security Specialist, Lightning Experience Reports & Dashboards Specialist), and ideally a volunteer Salesforce project through Salesforce.org's Pro Bono program or a nonprofit.

The Salesforce ecosystem genuinely hires without degrees if you can demonstrate platform competency — and the Trailhead portfolio is how you demonstrate it.

Does the GI Bill cover Salesforce certification exams?

Yes — Salesforce certification exams are approved for VA reimbursement under the GI Bill's licensing and certification benefit. Submit VA Form 22-0803 after paying the exam fee, and reimbursement applies whether you pass or fail.

Salesforce also runs the Trailhead Military program (formerly Vetforce), which provides free training, certification vouchers, and direct hiring partnerships specifically for veterans, transitioning service members, and military spouses — many veterans get their first Salesforce cert without using any GI Bill entitlement at all, preserving it for a degree later or other training.

How does Salesforce certification compare to other CRM certifications?

Salesforce dominates CRM market share — IDC reported 20.7% of the global CRM market for 2024, the #1 position for the 12th consecutive year — which means Salesforce-certified candidates have the deepest pool of employer demand among CRM ecosystems. Microsoft Dynamics 365 certifications are a smaller but well-paid market, especially in organizations already running the Microsoft stack.

HubSpot certifications are free and widely held but generally don't command the same salary premium because the platform's certifications are more marketing/sales-process focused than technical. For long-term earnings potential in CRM, Salesforce is the safest bet; for fastest entry, HubSpot.
