About the PMI-CP (Construction Professional) certification
The PMI-CP — formally the Construction Professional in Built Environment Projects (CPBEP) — is PMI’s credential for people who lead construction and infrastructure projects. Introduced in 2023, it is the only internationally recognized PMI certification with an in-depth curriculum built specifically for the construction industry, covering the things general project management glosses over: complex contracts and claims, interface management across many packages, change orders, and stakeholder communication on capital projects. It works differently from most PMI exams: you must first complete four foundational e-learning courses, then sit a capstone exam that integrates them. The four foundational courses (a prerequisite, not the exam domains)
One thing to get straight: the PMI-CP’s four required e-learning courses are not the same as the four exam domains above. The courses are the prerequisite curriculum that prepares you; the exam then re-weights that material into its own domains (heavily toward Contracts Management). The four courses, each a 6–10 hour self-paced module, are:
- Construction Project Communications — communication plans, stakeholder management, active listening, Commitment-based Management, and Obeya/Big Room conversations.
- Interface Management in the Built Environment — managing the handoffs and interface points between the many groups and packages on a build.
- Scope and Change Order Management in the Built Environment — controlling scope and running a disciplined change-order process to reduce downstream rework.
- Contract and Risk Management in the Built Environment — identifying key contract clauses, delivery methods, and using risk frameworks to reduce claims.
Each course ends in an assessment that earns a micro-credential badge and PDUs you can apply to other PMI certifications.

The PMI-CP is deliberately niche — built for professionals in construction and the built environment rather than general project managers. Its eligibility reflects that: three years of construction or built-environment project experience (within the last 10 years), with no formal project-management education required.
