About the PMP (Project Management Professional) certification
The PMP is PMI’s flagship credential for experienced project managers. Since the 2021 exam refresh it covers predictive, agile, and hybrid approaches in roughly equal weight, reflecting how modern project work actually happens — Waterfall-only candidates will find half the exam unfamiliar. Questions are scenario-driven rather than definition-driven; expect to choose “the best next action” from four plausible options, where the wrong answers are wrong for specific, learnable reasons. Who the PMP is for
PMI positions the PMP for practitioners who already lead projects — it is not an entry-level certification. The eligibility rules formalize that: you need either 36 or 60 months of project leadership experience (depending on your degree) plus 35 hours of project-management education before you can sit the exam.

Since the 2021 refresh, roughly half the exam reflects predictive approaches and the other half reflects agile or hybrid. In practice that means you cannot pass with PMBOK alone — PMI’s Agile Practice Guide covers the agile content explicitly, and a candidate from a pure-Waterfall background will find a meaningful fraction of the People-domain questions unfamiliar. A typical preparation runs eight to twelve weeks of consistent study: PMBOK Guide and Agile Practice Guide as primary references, scenario-based practice questions weekly, and at least one full timed simulation in the final week. Candidates with strong agile experience often need extra Process-domain work; candidates from predictive PMOs typically need extra People-domain and agile-ceremony work.
